On a unique plot overlooking the waterfalls and the Mrežnica River, adjacent to an old mill, the owners aimed to construct a holiday home suitable for extended stays. In harmony with the stunning natural surroundings, the design emphasizes ecological construction and the use of natural materials.
A significant challenge of the project is the steep terrain and the limited area available for construction. The house is nestled within the boundaries of the construction limits, maintaining a low profile. The irregular structure consists of two floors: one partially embedded in the ground and the other entirely above it.
The subterranean section is made of reinforced concrete, while the upper volume features a lightweight wooden structure—crafted from cross-laminated timber (CLT) and wrapped in wooden facade. The access road provides a view over the roof towards the river, giving the impression of a single-story home. It is only from the riverside that one can see the distinctly different volumes, both elevated above the sloping landscape.
The objective was to create a strong connection with the surrounding beauty, both inside and outside the home. To achieve this, the upper wooden structure extends over a terrace that runs along the house, and from the living room's corner window, occupants can enjoy breathtaking views of the waterfalls and the river.
